Survey Finds Strong Support for Nuclear Power Among Swiss Citizens
According to reports, research conducted by the Association for the Promotion of Applied Social Research (GFS.bern) found that 79% of respondents favor keeping existing nuclear power plants in operation for as long as they meet safety standards.
The survey also showed growing acceptance of future nuclear projects, with 59% expressing support for the construction of advanced nuclear facilities.
Reports suggest that the renewed interest in nuclear energy is largely driven by concerns over the country's long-term electricity supply. Despite this trend, renewable energy sources remain the preferred option for many respondents when addressing potential power shortages.
Commenting on the findings, political scientist Urs Bieri said, “Security of supply is a major issue in Switzerland in 2026. We are wondering at whether renewable energies will be sufficient. We are therefore looking for alternatives, and nuclear power is one of them.”
Energy security has become an increasingly prominent issue in public debate, according to reports. Patrick Berstchy, director of Networks at Romande Energie, also noted that concerns surrounding energy availability are currently among the top priorities for Swiss citizens.
