Swiss Poll Shows Likely Rejection of Population Cap Proposal

(MENAFN) Swiss voters are on track to reject a proposal to cap the country’s population at 10 million by 2050, according to a new opinion poll published by Swiss broadcasting, as stated by reports.

The poll finds that 52% of respondents oppose the “No to ten million Switzerland” initiative, while 45% support it and 3% remain undecided.

Opposition rises by five percentage points compared with an earlier survey conducted in early May.

The initiative, backed by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, aims to limit immigration to prevent the population from exceeding 10 million. Switzerland’s population currently stands at about 9.1 million.

Support is strongest among Swiss People’s Party voters, while left-wing voters largely oppose the plan. The poll also shows growing skepticism among centrist voters as the campaign continues.

It further finds stronger opposition among women, highly educated voters, urban residents, and French-speaking citizens, with Swiss citizens living abroad showing even higher rejection rates.
